Abstract

The term Industrial waste refers to the byproduct of industrial activities. Waste has the potential to cause catastrophic damages to the ecosystem depending on the management of said waste. Generally, waste can be classified into solid waste, liquid waste, gaseous waste, and toxic waste. This study was conducted through an online meeting with PT. Sasa Inti. The company was built in 1968 following the influx of demands for ready-to-eat food products. As of the time of writing, PT. Sasa Inti is a major contender in the Indonesian food product market, even expanding towards a more international market. It has one of the highest numbers of production, directly correlating to a high number of industrial waste. Various allegations have been made against the company addressing its suspected poor waste management. This study sought to investigate the company’s waste management methods and surveillance of industrial waste through a combination of literature review and interviews. Here we show that, contrary to the various allegations, PT. Sasa Inti does not only do their part at keeping pollution levels at bay, but they also take full responsibility for waste products that have since been out of the company’s reach. For the management of liquid waste, PT. Sasa Inti utilizes a system known as IPAL, where liquid wastes are managed through catalyzation by virtue of microorganisms and would then be dumped in the river following a monthly inspection by the local government. Solid wastes would undergo a process of filtration and separation to be dried and shipped off for further use. Toxic wastes are managed by a third party that specializes in the management of toxic wastes. Gaseous wastes are managed by boilers and are followed by frequent inspections following parameters issued by the Indonesian government. Keywords: industrial waste, waste management
