Abstract

Tissue culture is a method of plant propagation in vitro and under aseptic conditions. Some educational institutions, such as UBAYA, have implemented this method for the benefit of learning and entrepreneurship. The main purpose of this excursion study activity is to find out the basic concepts of tissue culture and its application in the business field. This study was conducted by observing two UBAYA projects, namely PPAU (Pusat Pembibitan Anggrek UBAYA) and KUH (Kalbe UBAYA Hanbang-bio) Lab through online meetings via ZOOM application. PPAU is an agribusiness that provides orchid seeds through tissue culture and KUH Lab is a collaboration program between educational institutions (UBAYA), industry (Kalbe), and Hanbang-bio. This lab was built to reduce the needs of ginseng import and develop herbal medicine. Through these observations, it is found that the tissue culture method could help to fulfil the high demand from people and industry. The nursery process using the tissue culture method can produce quality seedlings in a shorter time than the conventional methods. Based on these observations, it can be concluded that the application of tissue culture in the field of agribusiness is very profitable. Also, PPAU still has a lot of demand to manage and KUH Lab needs to explore more for the diversity of herbs in Indonesia. Keywords: tissue culture, agribusiness, PPAU, KUH Lab
