Abstract

ABSTRACT Shelfinna, Amanda, L., Wijaya, J, et al. (2021). Penerapan Purifikasi Hormon Eritropoetin dalam Industri Farmasi PT Daewoong Infion In human health life, biology has played an important role, especially in the field of pharmacy, which can help the production of drugs to support human health. Daewoong Infion Ltd. is an Indonesian-South Korean joint pharmaceutical company that specializes in biotechnology, specifically cell culture, for the medicine production. One of the medicine that the Daewoong Infion Ltd. manufactured was epodion, which contains erythropoietin as in its active form. Erythropoietin is a peptide-based hormone that has the ability to stimulate the production of erythrocytes, which is also known as erythropoiesis. Under normal body conditions, the erythropoietin hormone is mostly produced by the kidneys, and the rest is the liver. Erythropoietin also has sugar addition on its molecular shape, therefore it is known as a glycoprotein enzyme. In the production of recombinant human erythropoietins, many contaminants are byproducts of cell culture mixed in erythropoietin, such as bacteria, viruses, endotoxins, stem cell metabolic waste, etc. If contaminants are not eliminated, there is a potential hazard for drug recipients. The drugs produced, apart from being free from contaminants, must also be pure from dimers and other particles. Therefore, the purification process is absolutely required to eliminate contaminants and maintain the purity of the desired proteins. The particular reason of this study is to examine the processes of purification. This is done by examining the successive procedures in which erythropoietin is purified. After purification, results show a significant decrease in concentration of impurities. To sum up everything that has been stated, the process of purification performed an indispensable role in eliminating impurities in order to get the purest form of erythropoietins. Keywords : erythropoietin, biotechnology, purification.
