Abstract
The chlor-alkali industry is one of the most impactful industrial sectors in Indonesia. One of the prime examples of a factory in this industrial sector is PT Pabrik Kertas Tjiwi Kimia Tbk. Established in 1972, initially producing caustic soda, the factory started expanding to the paper industry in 1978, peaking at 12,000 tons of paper per year. Despite paper being the main product they produce, the chemicals that create paper which are produced from the chemical factory are just as crucial. This study aims to observe and analyse the processes used in the chlor-alkali industry to mass produce chlor-alkali chemicals effectively. To investigate the processes, a meeting was arranged with representatives from the factory to discuss the procedure behind the chlor-alkali industry. Representatives from the factory gave further insights on the processes used within the chlor-alkali industry by answering multiple questions from the participants. Additional data regarding the processes were gained through literature review done by the writers from articles and papers from the web. From the observations, it is found that the method of electrolysis used by the factory, which is facilitated by an ion-exchange membrane is one of the most efficient methods of electrolysis up to date. It has the lowest energy demands compared to previous older methods, whilst still being able to produce high-concentration solutions without big negative environmental impacts. This is proven by the lower energy requirements needed for producing NaOH compared to the older methods. To conclude, despite having lower purity levels in its NaOH production when compared to the mercury method, the ion-exchange membrane method is considered more superior for its appropriate cost, use of energy, as well as its environmentally friendly characteristics. Keywords: electrolysis, chlor-alkali, caustic soda, ion-exchange membrane
