Abstract

Plant tissue culture (micropropagation) is a vegetative propagation technique. This technique manipulates the somatic tissue by growing plant parts, either in the form of cells, tissues, or organs in aseptic conditions in vitro. Tissue Culture cultivates plant tissue into a new plant which possesses the same properties as its parent. In modern times like now, science and technology have significant roles in the business world. Therefore, tissue culture is an innovation in biological science with a promising business opportunity. One of the business actors in this field is the University of Surabaya. This plant tissue culture business is created and developed through research and cooperation from faculty, students, and university staff. Orchids and ginseng are the plants developed by the Faculty of Biotechnology in the University of Surabaya through tissue culture techniques. The seeds of the plants are then sold freely. The purpose of this study is to discover and study the tissue cultures, such as the processes, advantages and disadvantages, differences with natural propagation, as well as business opportunities of said cultures. The data collection process in this report was carried out by using an unstructured interview method. In this unstructured interview, the authors ask questions in the form of important points that the respondents want to deepen. The results of this study show that plant tissue culture offers a lot of advantages or benefits in terms of time, quality, and material obtained. Compared to natural propagation, tissue culture has several differences in terms of time, method, place, and result. This comparison also indicates that tissue culture has more advantage than natural propagation. Not only that, the process itself is quite simple and uncomplicated even though it requires a lot of money. Keywords : plant tissue culture, biotechnology, business
