Abstract

The development of science and technology encourages progress in various sectors such as Biology, with the emergence of biotechnology. Biotechnology has many focus areas that can be studied, one of which is tissue culture. Tissue culture aims to multiply plants in a short time, produce mutants, produce secondary metabolites, produce haploid plants, and eliminate pathogens in plants. The data collection method used in this excursion study is the interview method which is conducted through zoom. Plant tissue culture is a technique of planting plant tissue in an aseptic (sterile) and controlled (in-vitro) environment so that the tissue grows into a whole plant / the desired plant part. The tissue culture process begins by cutting the parts of the plant that will be used as explants and then cleaning the surface of the explants from intruding microbes using sterilants, planting explants on the media, multiplication, rooting until acclimatization. Tissue culture techniques have been used in various sectors. Such as producing high-quality seeds in agriculture, as an alternative method for obtaining secondary metabolites in the pharmaceutical sector, and the nursery of herbal and ornamental plants. This excursion activity with the University of Surabaya is very useful for students of St. Louis 1 High School Surabaya. The authors really hope that the Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Surabaya can develop its Biotechnology department and create graduates who can advance the tissue culture industry in Indonesia. Besides that, the authors also hope that in the future Ubaya can expand its cooperation through projects at home and abroad. Keywords: biology, biotechnology, plant tissue, in-vitro
