Abstract
Fertilizer is one of the most important needs in supporting food production. The use of fertilizer makes it important to keep production going well. To support the production of fertilizer, there must be power plants in the factory to distribute electricity in their factory for industrial needs. These electric generators apply the physics concept of heat, thermodynamics, and mechanical efficiency. This study intends to understand and analyze the mechanism of electric generators in the PT Petrokimia Gresik factory, including the distribution of the electricity and how the factory processes coal to be used as their main power source. There are two methods that are being used to collect the information needed in this study. The first method is interviewing the factory employees. The interview aims to provide credible information. The second method is the literature review. The literature review provides data or information which has not been explained by the factory employees. This method also can be used to fix and improve the accuracy of the report. In further steps, the collected data will be analyzed so a conclusion can be drawn. The results of this study show that the process of converting power source (coal) to electrical energy utilizes machinery that applies physics. Examples are coal-handling system, coal mill, demin water plant, cooling tower, boiler, electrostatic precipitator (ESP), turbine, and generator. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that coal can be converted to electrical energy, which will be utilized in production thus without coal the factory’s performance will be negatively impacted. Keywords: fertilizers, thermodynamics, power plant, coal, electrical energy
