Abstract

Biotechnology has made a major contribution to the improvement of medical industries, specifically in the culture of cells. During the Biology excursion study, observations were made on the manufacture of EPODION, a medicine from PT Daewoong Infion. EPODION has Erythropoietin as its active ingredient, which is obtained through cell culture biotechnology. The aim of this study is to understand information about animal cell culture in biotechnology, Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, and also the methods PT Daewoong Infion uses to make Erythropoietin. The result was found by listening to a presentation and doing an unstructured interview with the representative from PT Daewoong Infion, Ms. Julita S.Si., Apt,. Apart from that, other information was also taken from the company’s official website. Upon the observation, PT Daewoong Infion uses threesteps of culturing process with the help of T-Flasks and Roller Bottles. The usage of MCB (Master Cell Bank) is to culture Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells which are then given a different medium for the Erythropoietin proteins to be harvested. In conclusion, PT Daewoong Infion is suggested to produce MCB (Master Cell Banks) in Indonesia to increase its production efficiency, whereas for the government to give further support for biopharmaceutical companies as an effort to advance their productivity in Indonesia.
