Abstract

Indonesia has many tourist villages. Kampung Majapahit Desa Bejijong is a tourist village located in the heart of the former territory of Majapahit Kingdom, more precisely in Trowulan District, Mojokerto Regency, East Java Province. This study explored one of the royal heritage traditions of Majapahit, namely tumpeng. The main focus of this study was exploring the meaning of tumpeng and the side dishes that come along with it, the ingredients that complement tumpeng, the types of events that involve tumpeng, and community participation in making tumpeng. The research method used was qualitative,and the data collection techniques used to complement the research information were observation and interviews with residents. The collected data was that the reason for tumpeng’s cone shape was that the bottom wide part represented humans, while the top pointy part represented God. The seven ingredients surrounding tumpeng represented nature's prosperity. This food was often used in events such as birthdays, building constructions, weddings, circumcisions, and other events. Lastly, the most important thing in making a tumpeng was the intention, good intention meant that tumpeng will be served in a good way and the other way around. From this study, we could also learn that tumpeng is used for many purposed, either religiously or celebration. This study concluded that the tumpeng tradition was being carried out from the past up until now and everyone is allowed to made tumpeng. The meaning of the tumpeng in the Kenduri event held in XI Social cultural study activities was that God is always with us and brings blessings of peace to everyone. Because many people still didn’t know much about tumpeng, the writers suggested that the information about tumpeng should be spread across social media platforms to persuade people to come to Bejijong Village and saw the tumpeng for themselves. The writers also suggested for those who want to explore deeper about tumpeng or to make a more complex study, they can use this existing study as a reference and a guide to what they're about to explore.
