Abstract
For the past decade, steel manufacturing has experienced massive transformations. The evolution in stainless itself has resulted in many specific variants that are differentiated by their composition. Although the knowledge related to stainless was readily available, the public as a whole believed stainless steel as one monolith group. Therefore, there is a need to research the various types of stainless steel that are widely obtainable in Indonesia, which is type 201 and 304. As one of the largest producers of stainless steel in East Java, the abundant knowledge and expertise possessed by PT CATERLINDO – STAINLESS STEEL Indonesia will provide the substance to our research. The main aspiration of this report is to understand the components, attributes, utilization of type 201 and 304, and to learn the affinity of steel corrosion from each type. The means to obtain the necessary information are by literature review, in-situ observation, real time interview, and experimentation. It is discovered that the main materials for the creation of stainless steel are chrome (Cr), nickel (Ni), carbon (C), and manganite (Mn). Divergences between type 201 and type 304 are mainly shown in its content of chrome, as chrome determines the amount of protection from corrosion. The chrome proportions in type 201 and 304 are respectively 16-18% and 18- 20%. The rate of corrosion also depends on many factors such as hygiene, method of safe- keeping, and contact with detrimental elements such as chlorine. Other than that, components such as Nickel and others also affect the utilization of said stainless steel type. Thus, the proportion of materials affects the type of stainless steel. Keywords: Stainless steel, type 201, type 304, corrosion, chrome, nickel, manganite, carbon
