Abstract

To make foams, it is necessary to have polyurethane as the main ingredient. However, polyurethane also requires other materials that can be harmful to the environment. Thus, a study was conducted to analyze the materials that are included in the production of foams. There are a few approaches that are used in this study. Scientific journals, reports, encyclopedias, and other types of scientific texts are used in order to get information regarding the chemical components. For further factual information, an excursion was done at CV. Gesalunda Foam. The trip was in the form of passive participant observation. Questions were asked in a semi-structured interview. Once the data are ready, data reductions, display, and verification are done. The first step of making foams is mixing these 5 ingredients: polyurethane, toluene diisocyanate, calcium carbonate, plastic dye, a mixture of silicon with amine catalyst, and methyl chloride. Once the foams are ready, they are put in a machine to be cut. If the results are undesirable, they can either be recycled or burned. If they are not able to be used again, the producer will burn the foams, leaving no waste behind. The chemical component TDI can be very dangerous because it creates carbon monoxide that could potentially cause cancer or bronchitis after a chemical reaction with air. In conclusion, the production of foams can be dangerous when the waste is burnt, releasing dangerous gas into the air. It is better for foam manufacturers to dispose of their chemical waste with a safer method.
